Abstract:
This laboratory has focused on drug
hypersensitivity for many years. In
the past, we investigated human immune responses to sulfamethoxazole as a model system to
test a series of hypotheses about haptenation and immunopathologic reactions to haptens in
humans. Most recently, our research has
become more clinically-focused. We currently
are involved in several projects that address important issues in drug hypersensitivity. These include: a) identifying and
classifying adverse drug reactions (ADRs) at Parkland Memorial Hospital; b) determining
the degree to which patients who have a history of pencillin allergy but who no longer
have penicillin-specific IgE antibodies (skin test negative) convert to a skin test
positive state; c) determining the degree of cross-reactivity that exists between
penicillin and cephalosporins, another class of beta-lactam antibiotic; d) evaluating the
purity of penicillin skin test reagents using NMR spectroscopy and e) classifying patients
who present with multiple drug allergies to determine if indeed this a syndrome
characterized by a heightened ability to produce immune responses to small haptenic
agents.
This laboratory is also very
interested in another important clinical problem, pediatric asthma. Currently, we are involved in a multi-center NIH
study examining the role of indoor allergen control and morbidity associated with asthma
in inner city asthmatic children. In
addition, we are beginning to examine the effects of indoor and outdoor air pollutants,
such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide on asthma morbidity as well.
