FRISC: The Faculty Research Interests Science Comparator

The Faculty Research Interests Science Comparator (FRISC) is our first electronic text mining project. The goal of the FRISC system is to dramatically improve the ability of biomedical researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to find information that is relevant to their areas of study, and to provide them with a single source for that information. The FRISC algorithm compares each UTSW "Faculty Research Interests" page to MEDLINE abstracts using the etBlast search engine. Our algorithm currently uses a global weighted keyword similarity comparison which we are continually refining. Natural Language Processing and Grammar Induction codes developed by Perot Systems Nederland will be added in the near future. Since this is an experiment in its earliest phase, we request your comments and criticisms so that we can improve the algorithm, features, user interface and value to you.
