Alzheimer's disease A type of senile dementia that affects around 5 per cent of people over 65 years of age and ~10 per cent of those over 80, and which is characterized by memory loss and personality changes, eventually leading to dementia and senility. A rare familial form (familial Alzheimer's disease, FAD) with earlier onset also occurs, and has been found to be genetically heterogeneous. Alzheimer's disease is a NEURODEGENERATIVE DISORDER characterized histopathologically by neuronal degeneration in certain areas of the brain; deficits of neurotransmitters, their synthetic enzymes, and receptors; and the presence of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain.
