Immunoglobulin genes The IMMUNOGLOBULINS function as cell- surface antigen receptors on B cells and as secreted ANTIBODIES. An immunoglobulin molecule is composed of two identical heavy (H) chains and two identical light (L) chains. Light chains may be either the kappa (k) type or lambda (l) type (see ANTIBODIES). Each chain of the immunoglobulin molecule consists of two functionally distinct regions: an N-terminal variable (V) region, and a C-terminal constant (C) region. The antigen- binding site is formed by the pairing of heavy and light chain V regions, whereas the C region domains mediate characteristic biological activities (effector functions) associated with immunoglobulin molecules (see ANTIBODIES; IGA; IGD; IGE; IGG; IGM; IMMUNOGLOBULIN STRUCTURE).
