Your submitted paragraph:
prenatal diagnosis The detection of a genetic disease before birth. It is usually applied when a couple are known to be at risk of having a child with a serious genetic disorder which can be identified before birth. Prenatal diagnosis is carried out by either direct inspection of the foetus for malformation, analysis of amniotic fluid (amniocentesis), chorion villus sampling, or, most recently, direct sampling of fertilized ova after in vitro fertilization. Chorion villus sampling involves removal of a small amount of the chorionic tissue which surrounds the foetus between 9 and 13 weeks gestation and which is of foetal rather than maternal origin.
