acatalasia, acatalassaemia AUTOSOMAL RECESSIVE condition associated with the lack of the enzyme CATALASE. It is a heterogeneous disorder with more than five subtypes. In the tissues catalase normally acts to protect against oxidation by converting the powerful oxidant H2O2 (produced by local bacteria) to O2 and H2O. In the absence of catalase the clinical manifestations of the condition range from small ulcers in the mouth to extensive tissue and bone destruction.
