acetylcholine (ACh) NEUROTRANSMITTER active at cholinergic synapses and MOTOR END PLATES (Fig. A8). It interacts with two types of receptor: G protein-coupled MUSCARINIC RECEPTORS in the central and peripheral nervous system, and ligand-gated ion channel NICOTINIC RECEPTORS in the central nervous system and at motor end plates. Acetylcholine is removed from the synaptic cleft by hydrolysis to choline and acetic acid in a reaction catalysed by acetylcholinesterase. See also: G PROTEIN-COUPLED RECEPTORS.
