actin Protein (monomer Mr 42 000) present in almost all eukaryotic cells where it forms the MICROFILAMENT components of the cytoskeleton. Actin monomers (G- actin) polymerize end to end to form actin filaments (F-actin) ubiquitous in the cytoplasm of most eukaryotic cells and which also make up the thin filaments of muscle. In muscle (and nonmuscle cells) actin filaments form a contractile complex with MYOSIN.
