central dogma A scheme first proposed by Francis Crick in 1958 which accounted for the apparent unidirectional flow of genetic information from DNA to protein via an RNA intermediate (Fig. C32). This `Central Dogma of Molecular Biology' has had to be revised following the discovery of REVERSE TRANSCRIPTASES which partly reverse the flow of genetic information by synthesizing DNA from an RNA template.
