fluorescence energy transfer Technique which can be used for estimating the length of a macromolecular structure. A different fluorescent dye is attached to each end of the molecule and the transfer of energy between them on excitation is measured. Within a range 30-70 , the efficiency of transfer varies with the distance apart of the dyes. The technique has been used to study the HOLLIDAY STRUCTURE in DNA (see RECOMBINATION).
