Your submitted paragraph:
Proto-oncogene A term coined by M.J. Bishop in 1981, to describe the cellular homologue of a viral gene implicated in neoplastic transformation (an ONCOGENE). Proto- oncogenes serve normal cellular functions, but may contribute to neoplasia when their expression is altered by point mutation, translocation, or amplification. Examples of such genes are ras, myc and abl, prefixed with c- to distinguish them from their viral counterparts (prefixed v-).
