Kanamycin Aminoglycoside antibiotic (Fig. K2) produced by Streptomyces kanamyceticus which inhibits bacterial PROTEIN SYNTHESIS by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. It is widely used as a drug for selection in the transformation of bacterial and plant cells (see GENETIC ENGINEERING; PLANT GENETIC ENGINEERING) when used in combination with the bacterial neomycin phosphotransferase gene from the TRANSPOSABLE GENETIC ELEMENT Tn5 which confers resistance to kanamycin.
