ABO blood group system THE ABO histo-blood group system is a polymorphic system of antigens carried on red blood cells and other tissues [1]. It was the first blood group system - the first genetic polymorphism - to be identified by immunology, by Landsteiner in 1900. Compatibility for the ABO system is the most important consideration in transfusion practice because of the regular presence of the reciprocal antibodies. Recognition of red cell antigen by the reciprocal antibody in incompatible blood leads to haemolysis.
