Your submitted paragraph:
Cell signalling Intercellular communication, the influencing of the behaviour of one cell by another, is carried out in two main ways. The first is by secreted molecules, such as hormones, growth factors, or neurotransmitters, which are secreted by one type of cell and act on distant or nearby tissues, depending on whether they are secreted into the bloodstream or directly into the intercellular medium. With the exception of the STEROID HORMONES and other lipid-soluble substances, these secreted signal molecules bind to cell-surface receptors on the target cell. The signal set up by binding of ligand to receptor is transduced across the cell membrane by the receptor to activate intracellular signalling pathways which lead to a specific response by the cell to the stimulus (see e.g. G PROTEIN-COUPLED RECEPTORS; GROWTH FACTORS; GROWTH FACTOR RECEPTORS; SECOND MESSENGER PATHWAYS; SYNAPTIC TRANSMISSION and individual named receptors).
